Construction crews from Russ & Company have begun preparing the site for the new Shorewood YMCA, a significant $20 million project located near Walnut Trails and Wynstone Drive. The facility, the first YMCA in Shorewood, is expected to open in the spring of 2026.

The new 50,000-square-foot YMCA will feature a wellness center, gymnasium, an eight-lane lap pool, group exercise studios, community rooms, and outdoor spaces designed for summer camps and youth sports programs. Additionally, it will house the Y’s Regional Office for YMCA branches across Will and Grundy counties, enhancing its support for local community initiatives.

“This project represents an exciting opportunity for the Village of Shorewood,” Mayor CC DeBold said earlier this year. “The YMCA is a well-respected organization with a strong family focus, making it a fantastic partner for our community. This facility will serve as a vital amenity for our residents and provide a space for health, wellness, and recreation.”

The decision to build the new YMCA comes with the closure of the Galowich Family YMCA on Houbolt Drive in Joliet.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Village of Shorewood. This new facility will not only serve the local community but also continue our mission of providing youth development programs and health and wellness resources to residents across Will and Grundy counties,” said Katy Leclair, President and CEO of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA.

Once the Shorewood construction is completed, the Galowich YMCA will be retired, and the property will be sold.
