In a virtual event connecting London and Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that Pirkx, an insurtech company focused on affordable well-being benefits, has chosen Chicago as its U.S. headquarters. This decision underscores the city’s growing role as a hub for innovative businesses.

The announcement featured Mayor Johnson and Pirkx founder and CEO Stella Smith, alongside representatives from World Business Chicago and local small business owners, who gathered at the Quad Cities Development Corporation in Bronzeville. As a gesture of support for local businesses, Pirkx provided complimentary memberships to 10 participating businesses, showcasing its commitment to empowering small enterprises.

Pirkx addresses a critical gap in the market, with 90% of the world’s 3.2 billion workers lacking access to essential workplace well-being benefits. The company’s platform offers over 40 benefits, including on-demand medical services, mental health support, financial tools, and skills training, all through a flexible, self-service technology platform.

“Chicago is a destination of choice for forward-thinking companies like Pirkx,” Mayor Johnson stated. “Their establishment here speaks volumes about our city’s role as a global business hub, especially in addressing the pressing issue of mental health within our business community.”

Founded in January 2019, Pirkx aims to provide freelancers, contractors, and small business employees with a comprehensive range of wellness benefits. Smith, supported by notable investors and initiatives, has ambitious plans to expand Pirkx’s impact globally, having already launched in Australia.

“The opportunity is enormous,” said Smith. “Millions of self-employed and gig workers lack access to crucial well-being benefits. We aim to revolutionize access for the global workforce, and Chicago is the perfect city to start this next phase of our growth.”

The announcement was part of a strategic business development trip led by Mayor Johnson and World Business Chicago, focused on strengthening global ties and fostering economic growth opportunities for Chicago.
