A $93.5 million reconstruction project at the interchange of Interstate 55 and Illinois 59 is completed, marking a pivotal moment in Will County’s infrastructure development.
The newly designed diverging-diamond interchange replaces what was previously a partial access interchange into a full-access design, allowing traffic from all directions to connect seamlessly.
“Through Rebuild Illinois, we are modernizing our transportation systems and driving economic growth statewide,” said Governor J.B Pritzker. “This project will provide a safer and more efficient transit experience while boosting the local economy.”
Key improvements include the relocation of East Frontage Road, auxiliary lanes added to I-55, and modernized traffic signals, all designed to improve safety and reduce conflict points. “This project is a long-term investment that makes Will County an even better place to work, play, grow your business, and raise a family,” Osman noted.
Additional enhancements to the area include improved sidewalks, connections to local trails, and new lighting along I-55. As construction wraps up, work on a multiuse path, a new traffic signal at Illinois 59 and Seil Road, and landscaping will continue into early 2025.
The interchange is a key component of IDOT’s overall I-55 at Illinois 59 Access Project, funded by the Rebuild Illinois program, which allocates a historic $33.2 billion over six years to upgrade the state’s transportation infrastructure.
Transportation Secretary Omer Osman remarked that the new interchange will significantly enhance the movement of people and goods throughout the region, laying the groundwork for job creation and economic development. The redesign allows for full access in both directions, making it easier for drivers to navigate between I-55 and Illinois 59.
