A significant development is on the horizon for Washington Park as the Chicago Plan Commission has given the green light to the construction of a new community center. This project, spearheaded by Sunshine Gospel Ministries, aims to create a hub for the local community, offering various resources and services. In this blog, we will delve into the construction and design aspects of this new community center, with a focus on details that are most relevant to workers in the construction field.

Sunshine Gospel Ministries is the developer for the three story, 75,000 sq. ft. project.

The new community center will be constructed on a 1.6-acre site in Washington Park, covering a total of 55,000 sq. ft. across two floors. The structure will rise three stories tall on the main street corner.

Multiple spaces will be dedicated to community use, including a 2,000 sq. ft. cafe, community room, 20,000 sq. ft. fitness facility with two courts, and 10,000 sq. ft. of classroom and multi-use space.

Spaces are designed to be flexible, allowing them to be used for various purposes, including educational programs, social services, and community gatherings. Additionally, recreational facilities will be a key component, with areas designated for physical activities and sports. The building will be surrounded by a small plaza, outdoor park space with walking paths, sports courts and 90 vehicle parking space.

The new facility will also house health and wellness services, including spaces for mental health counseling, fitness programs, and other health-related activities. These services are crucial for addressing the holistic needs of the Washington Park community, promoting physical and mental well-being.

Chicago Yimby reports that the construction of the new community center in Washington Park will require careful coordination with the existing infrastructure. The 1.6-acre site will need to be prepared to accommodate the new building, which may involve clearing existing structures or modifying the landscape. Workers will need to ensure that the construction process minimizes disruptions to the surrounding community and adheres to all local regulations.

The approval marks a significant milestone for the neighborhood, promising to bring much-needed resources and services to the area. With a focus on providing flexible spaces for education, recreation, and health services, the center is set to become a cornerstone of the community.

For construction workers, this project offers the chance to contribute to a development that will have a lasting positive impact on the lives of Washington Park residents. As the project moves forward, it will serve as an example of how thoughtful design and community engagement can come together to create a facility that truly serves the needs of its use.
