The City of Gary has broken ground on a new facility for Brothers’ Keeper, a shelter serving homeless men and veterans.
City officials marked the start of construction at the future site of the facility at 2196–2160 Washington Street. The project is funded by a $3 million investment through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.
The new facility will replace Brothers’ Keeper’s current location on Broadway and is intended to provide a safer, more modern environment for residents and staff.
“This new facility will provide a safe, modern space that restores dignity and expands support for Gary’s homeless men and veterans,” the city said in a social media post announcing the groundbreaking.
The City of Gary is working with the Gary Common Council on the project.
Construction was initially expected to begin in June, with the goal of welcoming residents by October 2026.
An approved base budget will fund construction of a two-story core facility with dormitory-style housing, counseling offices and interview rooms, along with multipurpose community spaces.
The site will also preserve and enhance the adjacent Urban Garden being developed in partnership with the Gary Food Council and is expected to serve as a therapeutic and vocational space for residents.
