Construction is underway on the second phase of Champaign’s Downtown Plaza project, marking the next step in the city’s plans to transform a downtown block into a larger public gathering space.
Work began the week of Aug. 3 with roadway and utility improvements on Washington Street near Walnut Street. Phase 2 will extend the plaza north to Washington Street and add several new features intended to create a more active and pedestrian-friendly downtown destination.
The first phase included a performing arts stage, bench swings, public art and planting beds. The second phase will build on those improvements with a pedestrian promenade south of the Orpheum that will connect the plaza with public parking on Fremont Street.
The expanded plaza will also include an interactive, lighted pop-jet fountain, a gently sloped lawn, musical benches and additional bench swings. Plans also call for business kiosks, a public restroom and a pétanque court, a game similar to bocce.
The project extends beyond the plaza, with full reconstruction planned for Washington Street and Neil Street adjacent to the site. A raised intersection will also be constructed at Neil and Hill streets as part of the project, with the goal of improving safety and creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
Illinois American Water will also replace aging water mains in and around the plaza while construction is underway.
