The Cook County Board of Commissioners has approved $5.9 million in planning, design and construction contracts for transportation projects across the county.
The projects, administered by the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways, are intended to improve infrastructure conditions, roadway operations and safety while supporting the regional economy.
The county approved $1.7 million for rehabilitation of nine bridges:
- Devon Avenue over Salt Creek
- Lake Cook Road over Buffalo Creek
- Central Avenue over the Illinois Central Railroad
- Sunset Ridge Road over the North Branch Chicago River
- Wheeling Road over McDonald Creek
- Edens Frontage Road over the Skokie River
- Wolf Road over Salt Creek
- Schoenbeck Road over McDonald Creek
- West Lake Avenue over the Des Plaines River
Work will include removing and replacing or repairing pavement adjacent to and over the bridges.
In Skokie, the board approved $4.2 million for reconstruction of Oakton Street from Skokie Boulevard to McCormick Boulevard.
The project also includes resurfacing portions of Knox and Kilbourn avenues, parkway and greenspace improvements at Kolmar Avenue, streetscape elements and brick pavers at select locations.
The projects are part of the county’s ongoing transportation capital program, which includes multimodal improvements intended to maintain infrastructure in a state of good repair and improve safety and mobility throughout Cook County.
