South Cook County to see $148 million in Infrastructure upgrades

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced projects in South Cook County will top $148 million.

“Rebuild Illinois is revitalizing communities and neighborhoods through significant investments in infrastructure and people,” Pritzker said. “This largest capital program in state history will deliver improvements that enhance transportation resilience, accessibility, and equity, while creating jobs and improving quality of life.”

Eight key projects in south Cook County are either underway or planned, with four set to finish by the end of 2024 and the remaining four expected to complete between 2025 and 2026.

Wood Street/Ashland Avenue Reconstruction

  • Scope: Includes new curbs, gutters, lighting, capacity improvements, modernized traffic signals, ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, and a new storm sewer system.
  • Timeline: Began in 2023; expected completion by late 2026.

Cicero Avenue (Illinois 50/83) Intersection Improvements

  • Scope: Reconstruction and widening at Cal Sag Road, 135th Street, and Midlothian Turnpike, with modernized traffic signals and ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps.
  • Timeline: Started in 2023; completion expected by the end of 2024.

183rd Street at Central Avenue Traffic Signal Installation

  • Scope: New traffic signals, pavement markings, and pedestrian crossings.
  • Timeline: Began in spring 2024; anticipated completion this fall.

Lincoln Highway (U.S. 30) at Cicero Avenue Signal Modernization

  • Scope: Signal upgrades.
  • Timeline: Started in spring 2024; expected completion by late 2025.

Southwest Highway (Illinois 7) Reconstruction

  • Scope: Reconstruction and drainage improvements from 131st to 135th Streets.
  • Timeline: Began in spring 2024; completion anticipated in summer 2025.

Torrence Avenue (U.S. 6) Resurfacing

  • Scope: Resurfacing and ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps from Harding Avenue to 173rd Street.
  • Timeline: Started in spring 2024; expected to finish this fall.

159th Street (U.S. 6) Resurfacing

  • Scope: Resurfacing from Carol Avenue to Torrence Avenue (Illinois 83), including ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps.
  • Timeline: Began in spring 2024; completion anticipated this fall.

127th Street over Cal-Sag Channel Bridge Deck Replacement

  • Scope: Replacement of the bridge deck.
  • Timeline: Estimated to start in late summer 2024; expected to finish by the end of 2025.
