Construction on the $500-million redevelopment of Shedd Aquarium has reached a major milestone, with project partners celebrating a topping-off ceremony as structural work advances on the transformative project.
The multi-year modernization program—part of the aquarium’s long-term “Experience Evolution”—is one of the largest cultural construction projects currently underway in Chicago. Work includes extensive renovations to the historic facility, new exhibit spaces, upgraded infrastructure systems and improved visitor circulation, all while the aquarium remains open to the public.
General contractor Pepper Construction said the topping-off marks a significant moment for crews working to bring the project to life.
“There are milestones and then there are moments that truly mark what it takes to bring a vision to life,” the company said in a social media statement. “Topping out is one of those moments.
“For our field teams, it represents far more than placing the final beam. It’s the culmination of months of coordination, problem-solving and daily leadership to bring a structure safely to its full height, setting the stage for everything that comes next.”

The redevelopment involves work across all levels of the aquarium’s original structure, including demolition and reconstruction of interior spaces, installation of new life-support systems for aquatic habitats and the addition of new galleries and public areas.
A key component of the project is improved connectivity within the campus, including upgrades linking the main building to the Oceanarium, along with expanded entrances and enhanced accessibility features.
Project partners include JLL, Valerio Dewalt Train and Klein & Hoffman.
Construction began in 2023 and is being delivered in phases, with major elements expected to continue through 2026 and full completion targeted for 2027.
Once complete, the project is expected to modernize the nearly century-old institution while enhancing its role as a major cultural and educational destination on Chicago’s lakefront.
