Sean Spellman joins CA Ventures as chief development officer

CA Ventures says Sean Spellman has joined its development team as chief development officer.

A news release says he is responsible for executing “a robust multi-sector pipeline that includes nearly 30 projects valued at more than $2 billion throughout the U.S.”

The role was formerly held by JJ Smith, now principal at CA Ventures and president of the firm’s student housing division, CA Student.

“Sean is a natural-born leader with a get-it-done attitude and is perfect for this role,” Smith said in a statement. “He is universally respected and well-liked throughout the commercial development community and I expect his design/build mentality and leadership skills to make an immediate impact at our fast-growing organization.”

Spellman, 43, started his career as a development manager at McShane Development Company, where he honed his design/build skills. He went on to lead the leasing, development and sales efforts as vice president of sales and development for Northern Builders Inc..

For the past six years, Spellman ran the Chicago office of Opus Development Co.

Spellman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Purdue University. He serves on the national board of directors for NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, and is a member of Urban Land Institute, National Multifamily Housing Counsel and the Executives’ Club of Chicago.
