The City of Joliet and the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) presented the conceptual development plan for the downtown and areas surrounding Joliet Gateway Transportation Center at an open house May 14.

The Downtown Joliet Equitable Transit Oriented Development (ETOD) Plan includes policies and actions to enhance development opportunities and mobility.“More people in the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods is what will add further vitality. Staff along with our consultant and community partners have been working on this planning project for over a year, and I am happy to see it get to this stage,” said Mayor Terry D’Arcy, noting that the draft plan underscores the need for more housing variety, which will bring more people into our downtown area.

Public input is expected to be critical to the development of a thoughtful and realistic plan for the area.

“We hope people will pop in and comment on the plan,” said city planner Jayne Bernhard. “Our consultant firm will make changes to the draft plan based on input received at the open house.”

The revised draft plan will be reviewed by the project steering committee, planning commission and land use and economic development committee before it is presented to the city council in July.
