Illinois State University’s board of trustees has named the university’s construction management facility the CORE Construction Laboratory, honoring CORE Construction’s significant support of the institution. The laboratory, located at 604 N. Adelaide St., will feature advanced facilities for construction management students and support the program’s growth.
CORE Construction Laboratory will offer a state-of-the-art space designed to enhance the educational experience for students in the construction management program. This naming recognizes CORE Construction’s long-standing commitment, including scholarship support, advocacy for Redbird Athletics, and employment opportunities for graduates.
“CORE Construction has long been a valued partner to Illinois State,” said Dr. Aondover Tarhule, president of Illinois State University. “From scholarship support for students in the construction management program to championing Redbird Athletics and employing our graduates, CORE Construction continues to elevate the Illinois State University experience.”
Jim Jacobs, CEO of CORE Construction, has a historical connection to the university, dating back to the mid-1990s when he worked with the late chemistry professor Dr. Sol Shulman on the development of the Science Laboratory. Jacobs admired Shulman’s principles of humility, trust, and transparency, which remain central to CORE Construction’s values today.
“CORE is honored to work with Illinois State University on projects that positively impact their growing campus,” said Tim Erickson, president of CORE Midwest. “We are excited about the Construction Laboratory as it provides students with opportunities to explore and pursue careers in construction and impact our industry.”
CORE Construction has contributed to Illinois State University, including the 2017 revitalization of the Bone Student Center and the recent redesign of the Center for the Visual Arts Rotunda.
The company also recruits from Illinois State’s talent pool through its annual participation in the construction management career fair. Alumni Todd Steffen ’99 and Tim Bassett ’09 hold regional president roles within the company.
“CORE Construction’s commitment to Illinois State University exemplifies the strength of our partnership and underscores the company’s investment in our shared mission and values,” said Pat Vickerman, vice president for University Advancement. “This collaboration not only fuels economic growth but also enhances educational excellence, creating a lasting impact on the University and the communities our graduates will empower.”
The CORE Construction Laboratory is expected to become a central hub for students pursuing careers in construction, continuing the tradition of excellence and collaboration between Illinois State University and CORE Construction.
