Chicago Construction News staff writer
Marisa Richards, a mother and IUPAT union member with over 10 years of experience in the construction trade industry is hoping her new children’s book will inspire girls to consider jobs in construction.
Girls Who Build introduces young readers to the world of construction, inspired by real women who do the work every day. Each page features a specific construction job and a strong female character who isn’t afraid of a little hard work.
From Lucy the Laborer to Winnie the Welder, learn what it takes to build our homes and cities from this inspiring group of girls. This picture book challenges gender norms, celebrates diversity, and shows readers that girls can do anything – including construction work.
Richards currently serves as a program director for PDC 30, a union labor organization in Aurora, Illinois.
She studied writing and copy editing at the University of Illinois and currently lives in Sugar Grove with her husband Jake and their two young daughters.
