Harper College and the Illinois Capital Development Board (CDB) marked a major construction milestone this week as the structural frame of the new Canning Student Center and University Center nears completion. Officials gathered on campus to commemorate the upcoming “topping out” of the $101.6 million facility, with full steel erection expected in early 2026.

“This facility will allow more students to grow, learn, and thrive, all while expanding opportunities for hands-on workforce development right here in Illinois,” Gov. JB Pritzker said during the event, calling the project an example of how state colleges are investing in student success. The 144,000-sq.-ft. center will consolidate key student services, including admissions outreach, academic advising, access and disability services, the cultural center and the job placement resource center, into a single hub. Plans also include student organization spaces, a community staircase, expanded dining options, classrooms, laboratories and wellness rooms.

Construction is progressing steadily. Crews have installed roughly 350 tons of the 871 tons of structural steel needed for the building. Concrete work is advancing as well, with 1,300 of the planned 4,800 cubic yards poured to date. Elevated decks and slab-on-grade work are expected to be completed by the end of March 2026, followed by site concrete work. The 59,000-sq.-ft. roof system remains on schedule for completion in July 2026.Holabird & Root is the project architect, with Path Construction serving as general contractor. The facility also includes a redesigned campus entry from Algonquin Road intended to create a modern gateway to Harper College.

“Today’s beam-signing marks an exciting milestone in bringing the Canning Student Center and University Center to life,” said Dr. Avis Proctor, president of Harper College. “We are building a welcoming, vibrant hub where students can access essential services, find community and explore academic and career opportunities.”

The new center will also expand hospitality management labs and learning spaces to support workforce needs in hospitality and food service. Through partnerships with DePaul University, Northern Illinois University, Roosevelt University and Southern Illinois University, students will be able to complete bachelor’s degree pathways on Harper’s campus.

“The Canning Student Center will be a tremendous investment in regional workforce development,” said TJ Edwards, executive director of the CDB. “This facility will give students an affordable and convenient way to complete a bachelor’s degree.”

Work on the project will continue throughout 2026.
