Electric utility ComEd, a subsidiary of Exelon, recently broke ground on a new Chicago North headquarters in the city’s Avondale neighborhood.

The new 104,000-sq.-ft facility will replace the 88-year-old building currently serving as ComEd’s Chicago North location. ComEd selected Scale Construction, a local Women and Minority Business Enterprise-certified business, as the general contractor for the project.

The new building will include a 10,000-sq.-ft. area dedicated to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning for community use, according to ComEd.

The new facility will be constructed using energy efficient products and methods and pursue LEED Platinum certification, the electric utility said in press statement.

Construction is expected to be completed by 2019.
