Two federal grants totaling nearly $300 million were announced last week for the 75th Street Corridor improvement project. Funding will pay for the next phase of rail projects along two passenger and four freight train lines.
“For the past 5 years, upgrading and modernizing our rail infrastructure has been among my highest priorities. Illinois is the largest rail center in the entire nation, playing a vital role in the flow of goods and commerce across the entire country,” Gov. JB Pritzker said in a statement.
The project is part of the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) Program. CREATE is a first-of-its-kind partnership between the Federal Highway Administration, State of Illinois, City of Chicago, Metra, Amtrak, and the nation’s freight railroads.
CREATE is investing billions in critically needed improvements to increase the efficiency of the region’s rail infrastructure and the quality of life of Chicago-area residents. The project’s Final Environmental Impact Statement is available for review.
