Illinois Green Infrastructure Grant Program (IGIG) has awarded a $750,000 grant to a “Field of Dreams” project in Alcott for storm water management of the field outside Alcott Elementary School, as a joint letter from state Rep. Ann Williams and Illinois Senate President John Cullerton confirms.

“We would like to give special thanks for the tremendous advocacy of Ald. Michele Smith, who has been an incredible source of support from the begging and continues to make our children’s future a top priority,” Williams and Cullerton said in the letter, reports Dnainfo.com.

The project includes construction of an artificial turf field with a baseball diamond, soccer field and a running track. Alcott Elementary and Chicago Public Schools will upgrade and improve the drainage under the field. The blacktop play area will be replaced with a permeable surface.

Design will begin in November and the project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2015.

The project is a parent-led initiative to revamp the field. Cubs Charities awarded $50,000 to the project in September.
