Construction is set to begin on Mt. Pisgah Apartments, a new affordable housing development in Evanston that will create 33 rental homes for low- and moderate-income households.
Community leaders, elected officials, faith leaders and development partners gathered May 11 for a groundbreaking ceremony for the mixed-use project at the current Mt. Pisgah Ministries site at 1813 Church St.
The development is being led by Housing Opportunity Development Corporation in partnership with Skender Construction, Mt. Pisgah Ministries and the City of Evanston.
The project will include one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments for households earning below 60 per cent of the area median income, along with approximately 2,250 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and shared community amenities.
Project partners say the development is intended to help working families, seniors and essential workers remain in Evanston close to jobs, schools, transit and community services.
The project also includes a land swap agreement that will allow Mt. Pisgah Ministries to relocate to a new worship centre at the corner of Church and Darrow while maintaining its presence in the community.
“This development is about creating stability and opportunity for families and individuals who deserve the chance to remain in the community they call home,” said Richard Koenig, executive director of Housing Opportunity Development Corporation.
“We are proud to partner with so many organizations and leaders who recognize that affordable housing is essential to a strong and thriving Evanston.”
