Ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Wolcott School athletic center

A former wrecking yard at 1950 W. Hubbard will be turned into “indoor sports and recreation facility” for the Wolcott School, located approximately two blocks away.

The Chicago building permit says the $4.3 million project “includes a gymnasium with a stage and bleachers, lockers and toilet rooms for both sexes and five studio spaces for a range of activities.” The address formerly was owned by Midwest Wrecking.

The permit also says the 16,022 sq. ft. structure will be on a 43,200 sq. ft. site, providing “parking for 35 cars plus off street bus parking and loading space.”

In a school newsletter article describing a ceremonial groundbreaking in February, the school said “Construction will be completed in fall 2017. The AAC project was designed by Lothan, VanHook, Destefano Architects in the modern style incorporating precast concrete, aluminum, and glass. Macon Construction is the builder with Daccord providing owner representation services.”

Key subcontractors include: Plumbing, Carbone Plumbing, Inc.; refrigeration and ventilation, Custom Air Services; and electrical, ABB.
