Illinois residents have until May 11 to participate in a virtual public event regarding the proposed high-speed rail network connecting Chicago and St. Louis. To participate in the virtual event, click the link: www.ilhighspeedrail.org.

The event, hosted by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), offers an opportunity to view a pre-recorded presentation, project exhibits, and provide feedback through comments and a survey.

The study will assess the necessity and viability of a statewide high-speed rail system that would integrate existing Amtrak and Metra services, linking cities such as Rockford, Moline, Peoria, and Decatur. Additionally, intercity bus services would be coordinated with the rail line to enhance connectivity across the state .

City Administrator Bob Vitas of Moline, a member of the Illinois High-Speed Rail Commission, emphasized the importance of public input in shaping the project’s direction. “Without that input, you’re planning in a vacuum,” Vitas stated. “You’re really trying to figure out the ridership. That’s the most important part.”

Key considerations include optimizing station locations to serve as many people as possible, facilitating connections to local transit and intercity bus networks, and ensuring accessibility for all communities.

“We’re ready. I think we’ve been ready for a long time,” said Moline City Administrator Bob Vitas, a member of the Illinois High Speed Rail Commission. “Without [public] input, you’re planning in a vacuum. You’re really trying to figure out the ridership. That’s the most important part.”

The state is hoping to tap into $177 million in federal funding earmarked for a separate passenger rail project between Moline and Chicago, alongside a $225 million state pledge.
