The Plumbers Union (UA) Local 130 has obtained a $25 million building permit to construct a seven-story parking garage, the first stage of a project including a six story building at 1371 W. Randolph St.

Specifically, the permit issued on May 14 says: “New construction of 7-story parking garage on caisson foundations. Building to include ground floor retail to be built out under separate permit. Site work includes surface parking lot.”

Block Club Chicago reported earlier that the union had filed paperwork to build a 500 space parking garage and an office building at the West Loop site.

Crain’s Chicago Business says the union, which has long owned what’s now a surface lot at 1341 W. Randolph St., next door to its training center, had proposed a 272,000-sq. ft. garage along the southern edge of Randolph, with 12,000 sq. ft. of ground-floor retail, according to a rezoning application filed with the city last year.

The plumbing contractor for the work is Warren F. Thomas, while the general contractor is W.E. O’Neil Construction Co. Other subtrades listed on the building permit include:  Electrical – Prime Electric Co., Inc.; masonry – O’Neil Industries, Inc.; and refrigeration and ventilation – Hill Mechanical Corp.
