A new multi-purpose community hub, the Blue Azul Center, is set for construction at 7950 S. Emerald Ave., promising to transform a vacant lot.
The $8 million project, led by local residents Eliseo and Valentina Pacheco-Cornejo, will repurpose half a block of unused space to provide recreational, educational, and mental health services for the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.
The center, spanning more than 20,000 sq. ft. and reaching approximately 40 feet in height, will feature a modern design with gray, white, and blue precast panels. The architectural design is being spearheaded by E.G. Woode, a South Side collective recognized for its innovative, community-focused projects. A small parking lot will be included at the south end of the site for visitors and staff.
The project recently received a $3.7 million Community Development Grant from the city, Block Club Chicago reported. Additional fundraising efforts are underway to secure the remaining funds, and construction timelines have not yet been announced.
The Blue Azul Center will include:
- Full-Sized Basketball Court: Designed for training programs and fitness sessions run by Think BLUE, a nonprofit founded by Eliseo Pacheco-Cornejo, the court will also provide a safe space for local youth.
- Fitness Center: A fully equipped gym to encourage physical health for all ages.
- Multi-Use Rooms: Flexible spaces for workshops, community meetings, and educational activities.
- Commercial Kitchen: A facility for cooking classes, nutrition education, and meal programs aimed at promoting wellness and workforce development.
- Mental Health Clinic: Dr. Valentina LLC, a mental health practice led by Valentina Pacheco-Cornejo, will offer clinical services, workshops, and student training opportunities.
- Outdoor Spaces: An indoor courtyard, outdoor seating, and a public basketball court with artistic murals.
