Granite Construction has been selected by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for a construction manager/general contractor contract to for the I-290 drainage improvements project in Chicago — IDOT’s first-ever CM/GC project.

The federally funded initiative marks the initial phase of a proposed $6 billion program to improve the entire I-290 corridor.

Valued at an estimated $350 million, work includes installing 3.3 miles of new trunk sewer with diameters up to 90 inches, constructing new detention systems, and rebuilding one bridge and several retaining walls. The improvements are designed to enhance stormwater management and reduce flooding along the Eisenhower Expressway.

“We’re honored to be selected for IDOT’s first CM/GC contract. This is a tremendous opportunity for our team,” said Brad Jacobson, Granite project executive. “As the initial phase of a proposed $6 billion I-290 corridor-wide improvement program, this project represents a major investment in the future of Illinois transportation.

“We’re proud to partner with the IDOT Innovative Project Delivery team to deliver infrastructure solutions that benefit communities throughout the region.”

The CM/GC delivery model allows for early contractor involvement, improving coordination and constructability during both design and construction. Granite’s Midwest Region and Tunnel Division will collaborate on the project.

Preconstruction activities are scheduled to begin this month, with construction expected to start in the first quarter of 2027 and finish by the fourth quarter of 2029.
