Construction officially began Monday at Beyer Stadium, marking the start of a $31 million, multi-year transformation of the historic ballpark into the future home of the International Women’s Baseball Center (IWBC) and Maybelle Blair Park. The milestone launches a world-class development designed by architect Jeanne Gang, aimed at modernizing the site while preserving its historic significance.

The project will be completed in three phases, with the first phase focused on renovating Beyer Stadium and creating Maybelle Blair Park. The park, located just north of the stadium, honors Maybelle Blair, a former All-American Girls Professional Baseball League pitcher and inspiration behind A League of Their Own. Features will include the Women’s Baseball Gallery, new Cohen Bleachers, and the Amazin’ Mets Foundation Press Box, all celebrating the pioneers and future stars of women’s baseball.

Green space just north of the stadium will be renamed Maybelle Blair Park, honoring one of the most beloved figures in women’s baseball. Blair, a former player in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, has spent her life promoting equality and opportunity in the game.

When completed, the IWBC will also include a museum and education center, offering exhibitions and youth programs, while attracting athletes and visitors from around the world. Rockford is scheduled to host part of the 2026 Women’s Baseball World Cup, highlighting the city’s growing role in women’s sports.

“It’s good to know that a project like this has brought support; it’s not just coming from our community but throughout the country and from the sport of baseball,” said John Groh, President and CEO of GoRockford.

Funding for the project includes more than $2 million in grants from organizations connected to the New York Mets, as well as contributions from the City of Rockford and the State of Illinois.

Phase one is expected to be completed in 2026. Organizers say Monday’s start of construction is the first step in turning Beyer Stadium and Maybelle Blair Park into a world-class hub for women’s baseball, preserving history while inspiring future generations.
