The City of Chicago has announced an agreement with several airlines to proceed with the Terminal Area Program (TAP) to modernize Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

“The City of Chicago is thrilled to announce the acceptance of its proposal by airline partners to proceed with the Terminal Area Program (TAP) to modernize Chicago O’Hare International Airport,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement. “We look forward to prioritizing the O’Hare Global Terminal to bring benefits to the traveling public sooner, while providing thousands of jobs and contracting opportunities to Chicago.”

The updated proposal by Mayor Johnson is to build a new global terminal first and complete the satellite concourses afterwards.

Designed by Studio Gang in collaboration with Studio ORD, the new terminal will replace Terminal 2.

With the approval from the airlines, the construction can proceed, but a timeline has not been released.

Today’s announcement is a major step forward in the growth of O’Hare – and the Chicago region – as a key hub for travelers from across the globe.

“We are extremely grateful to United Airlines, American Airlines, and other federal, state, and local stakeholders for their valued and trusted partnership,” Johnson said. “The city looks forward to continued collaboration towards improving the O’Hare experience for millions of travelers and maintaining the airport’s status as an essential global gateway.”
