Chicago Fire FC officially broke ground today on its new $750 million privately funded soccer stadium in the South Loop, marking a major milestone for the Club and a transformative investment in the city’s sports and entertainment landscape.
“From the projects we’ve completed in the past to the work we begin today, the new Chicago Fire FC stadium truly takes an army,” project contractor Pepper Construction said on social media following the groundbreaking. “We want to recognize everyone who has contributed along the way, especially those who couldn’t be here but will play an important role in bringing this project to life.
“And we extend our sincere thanks to the trades whose skill and dedication will help shape the skyline of Chicago through this work. See you in 2028!”
Pepper Construction, GMA Construction Group and All Construction Group were selected to manage the build as a joint venture.
Club Owner and Chairman Joe Mansueto, joined by Dave Baldwin, President of Business Operations, city officials, project partners, and community stakeholders, commemorated the event at a ceremonial groundbreaking along the Chicago River at The 78. The development represents Mansueto’s long-term commitment to Chicago and his vision for the growth of Major League Soccer.
Since acquiring full ownership of the Club in 2019, Mansueto has invested over $1 billion into Chicago Fire FC, including the $100 million Endeavor Health Performance Center, enhancements to the Club’s Academy, and expansions to its front office operations. The new stadium marks the next phase in a comprehensive plan to build a world-class soccer organization on and off the pitch.
“Groundbreaking days are special, and yesterday’s start of construction on the new 22,000-seat stadium for the Chicago Fire FC is one we won’t forget,” Related Midwest wrote. “There’s incredible momentum building at The 78 Chicago, and this stadium represents both progress and possibility. It’s hard to overstate how transformative this moment is; what was once a fallow piece of land just outside of the Loop will soon be a vibrant neighborhood.”
The area will see new housing, retail, improved infrastructure and more than six acres of open space that, together, will keep the neighborhood active all year long.
Designed by Gensler, the open-air stadium will seat more than 22,000 fans and feature a natural grass playing surface, 360-degree viewing, a dedicated supporters’ section engineered for atmosphere, and premium hospitality offerings that rival top venues worldwide.
The venue will serve as the permanent home for Chicago Fire FC while also hosting concerts, international sports matches, community events, and other large-scale programming year-round.
Located along the Chicago River, the stadium will anchor a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood and drive economic development in the South Loop. Public plazas, outdoor spaces, and connections to surrounding retail and residential projects aim to make the stadium a destination beyond matchdays.
“Yesterday’s groundbreaking ceremony for the Chicago Fire FC was nothing short of electric,” GMA Construction Group stated. “GMA is honored to bring this state-of-the-art facility to life alongside our partners Pepper Construction Group and ALL Construction Group.”
Construction is expected to be completed ahead of the 2028 MLS season, becoming the first major professional stadium constructed in Chicago in over 30 years.

This is a major win for Chicago and the South Loop. A privately funded $750 million stadium, new open space, retail, housing, and a 2028 target opening could make this one of the most exciting development projects in the city.
