The Chicago Fire FC has announced plans to build a $650 million soccer-specific stadium in The 78, a new waterfront development just south of downtown Chicago. Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2025, with the stadium opening projected for 2028.

The project will be entirely privately funded, according to club owner Joe Mansueto.

“Our privately funded stadium is purpose-built for soccer to give our players an edge and our fans an incredible matchday experience,” Mansueto said in a statement. “This development will be transformative for both the Chicago Fire FC and the city of Chicago. Our new stadium will be the anchor of this new neighborhood which will build community, create thousands of jobs, and have a significant positive economic impact.”

The stadium will feature a natural grass playing surface and serve as the anchor tenant of The 78 — a mixed-use development along the Chicago River just south of Roosevelt Road.

Plans include residential and office buildings, restaurants, retail space, public green areas, and an extension of the Chicago Riverwalk. The project is designed to create a vibrant, year-round destination in what is expected to become Chicago’s 78th official neighborhood.

Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber called it “one of the most ambitious stadium projects in MLS history,” praising Mansueto’s commitment to the club and the city.

“There’s no doubt that this will be a transformative moment for the club and a landmark for Chicago sports,” Garber said after touring the site.

The new stadium will mark a major shift in the Fire’s long history of relocations. Since their inaugural season in 1998, the team has played at several venues, including Soldier Field, Cardinal Stadium in Naperville, and SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview. The Fire returned to Soldier Field in 2020, where they currently play home matches.
