Chicago has issued a $40 million building permit to Brian Sheehan at CenterPoint Properties to build a “one storey rail production area with a two story office area” at 13535 S. Torrence.

The project relates to the plans for Chinese-owned CRRC Sifang’s American subsidiary, CRRC Sifang North America, to produce as many as 846 new rail cars for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) over the next 10 years in a $1.3 billion contract.

CRRC Sifang had said it would invest $100 million in building a 380,944-sq. ft.  manufacturing facility on 45 acres in Chicago’s Hegewisch neighborhood on the Southeast Side, the Chicago Tribune has reported.

Production will begin in early 2019. The facility will begin testing the new car prototype later that year and the cars will hit the rails by 2020.

The general contractor is FCL Builders, LLC. Key subtrades include: Electrical – Connelly Electric Co.; masonry – Richard & Weyer Const. Co. Inc.;  plumbing – Cecchin Plumbing; refrigeration and mechanical – Ames Mechanical.
