German pharmaceutical manufacturer Vetter has broken ground on a new clinical production facility in Des Plaines, marking a $285 million investment in its U.S. operations.

The facility will expand the company’s capacity for early-stage, small-batch manufacturing of injectable drugs and is expected to be ready for media fill testing by the end of 2029. The 860,000-square-foot site will also include warehouse space, laboratories, and administrative offices, with room for future expansion depending on global demand.

The new development adds to Vetter’s North American footprint, which includes an existing clinical manufacturing site in nearby Skokie. The company also operates a clinical site in Rankweil, Austria.

The Des Plaines facility is part of Vetter’s broader international growth strategy and is intended to strengthen its role in the aseptic filling of injectables during early clinical development.

Vetter is a global contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) that specializes in injectable drug products for pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
