The Public Building Commission (PBC)’s board of governors has approved a $13.46 million contract to expand the Walter Payton College Preparatory High School at 1034 N. Wells St.

Paschen Milhouse Joint Venture III has received the contract to construct three stories above the current structure, which will provide 49,000 sq. ft. of space to the selective-enrolment high school, reports Pbcchicago.com.

The space will include 11 classrooms for English, science and math as well as for music practice, art, dance and driver’s education. The plan also features a special education and resource classroom, a fitness room, a gymnasium with locker facilities, student lounge, cafe and a multipurpose theater with a partition to create two additional classrooms. An administrative office and an elevator to connect the annex with the current structure are also planned. The building will be constructed to the USGBC’s LEED for Schools Silver certification standard.

The contract also calls for the building’s interior renovation, where two classrooms will be converted into a biology lab and a new classroom as well as new theatrical and backdrop curtains for the school auditorium.

The expansion construction is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2016, and the renovation is expected to be completed before the school opens for the 2016-17 session.
