Work has started on an estimated $40 million addition to the Sauganash School at 6040 N. Kilpatrick ave.
The first stage of the project by Tyler Lane Construction is to demolish an almost 70-year-old gymnasium, Nadig Newspapers has reported. Then the contractors will build a three-story addition.
Legat Architects/UrbanWorks designed the structure.
Chicago Public Buildings chief development officer Ray Giderof said foundation work would be completed between March and May followed by structural steel beam work in June and July. The project is expected to be completed in November.
The 37,500 sq. ft. addition project will add a total of 14 classrooms, including dedicated rooms for art, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and music classes, as well as two pre-kindergarten classrooms. There also will be a new gym, new administrative and counselling offices, washrooms and an ADA elevator for accessibility.
