The Village of Plainfield has set up a live webcam to follow construction on the 143rd Street extension, a project that will create a direct route between Route 59 and Route 126.
D Construction is completing the eastern section of the extension and Austin Tyler Construction is working on the western part of the project.
The scope of work includes:
East 143rd St Extension – construction 2024-2025
- IL 59 to IL 126
- Involves constructing a new road between IL 59 and IL 126 with improvements at both intersections, a bridge over the DuPage River, a new signalized intersection at Plainfield-Naperville Road, and multiple culverts and retaining walls
West 143rd St Extension – construction 2024
- Ridge Road to Steiner Rd
- Involves constructing a new road between Ridge Road and Steiner Road including improvements at Ridge Road, stormwater improvements coordinated jointly with adjacent developments, and multiple culverts.
According to a July 18 update, Austin Tyler continues with the roadway reconstruction of 143rd Street this week as well as completing installation of 16-inch water main. D Construction broke ground in June.
When completed by the end of 2025, the extension will be four lanes and include about 7,000 feet of roadway, a bridge spanning the DuPage River and 2,000 feet of pathway.
The project is a key piece of the transportation and mobility plan and regional transportation planning and is expected to reduce local and regional traffic congestion. The village has received more than $50 million from federal, state and local governments and funding partners.
By rerouting IL 126 to the 143rd Street corridor, the village expects to create a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly downtown.
“It is a pleasure to be part of this project,” said Mayor Argoudelis. “It has spanned multiple administrations and our focus has never wavered on building this roadway.
“It will be a great engine of industrial development . . . and open our downtown to redevelopment opportunities without the heavy traffic.”
Future projects include:
- 143rd St at Wallin Drive
- Involves intersection widening including additional turn lanes to increase capacity through the intersection.
- East 143rd St Widening
- Wallin Drive to IL 59
- Involves adding lanes along the existing road (turning and/or thru lanes) to increase road capacity.
- West 143rd St Widening
- Steiner Road to Wallin Drive
- Involves adding lanes along the existing road (turning and/or thru lanes) to increase road capacity
- 143rd St Western Access
- IL 126 to Ridge Road
- Involves constructing a new road west of Ridge Road with a broad s-curve south to IL 126 reducing travel time along the corridor.
- 143rd Street Shared-Use Path
- Van Dyke Road to Wallin Drive
- Involves installation of an approximately 0.6-mile shared-use path extension on 143rd Street from Van Dyke Road to Wallin Drive and pedestrian crossing improvements at the intersection of 143rd St and Van Dyke.
