John A. Logan College has launched a major construction project to redevelop its main entrance and expand a central hub for students and visitors.

A ceremonial construction kickoff of the West Lobby and Logan Hall expansion was held last week for the project that will add more than 6,000 sq. ft. and create a new focal point for the campus.

The $6 million project, designed by BHDG Architects, will feature a modern, light-filled lobby intended to serve as a gathering and event space. It will also house new offices for Community Education, the John A. Logan College Foundation, a welcome area, and a board and meeting room. The expanded entrance is expected to improve student services, support gymnasium traffic and streamline operations.

The State of Illinois is partially funding the work, and Fager-McGee is serving as the general contractor. Construction was originally slated to begin in early 2026, but the schedule was advanced after the contractor had an early opening and the Illinois Capital Development Board approved a quicker start. Demolition began Nov. 17, and the project is scheduled for completion in May 2027.

“Thanks to the close coordination of our partners, work is getting underway, positioning us to deliver improvements sooner,” President Kirk Overstreet said. “This project represents a major investment in access, experience and community connection.”

During construction, the West Lobby’s front entrance will be closed, and the lobby itself will close Dec. 15. The Donald L. Brewer Gymnasium will remain open, but attendees at home basketball games will need to use the North Entrance. Updated maps and wayfinding signs have been placed throughout the area.

Overstreet said that while the work may temporarily disrupt how students and visitors navigate campus, the long-term impact will be significant.

“We may be closing one door today, but we are opening a better door to the future,” he said. “Together, we’re building a front door that reflects who we are and where we’re going — an inclusive college that welcomes the community, supports student success and inspires pride.”
