The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) will launch a major infrastructure project next month to replace the Chicago Avenue Bridge over the Chicago River and the nearby Halsted Street Viaduct, city officials announced Monday.
Construction is set to begin in early August and continue through the end of 2026. The project will involve intermittent lane reductions and full street closures in the area, officials said.
The work will include replacing the existing temporary Chicago Avenue bridge with a permanent tied-arch bridge, full reconstruction of the Chicago-Halsted viaduct, and the construction of a new riverwalk connection beneath the bridge.
Additional improvements include new street lighting and landscaping throughout the corridor, traffic signal modernization, and a new signal at the intersection of Chicago Avenue and Jefferson Street.
As part of the city’s efforts to enhance multi-modal transportation, the project will also include the installation of dedicated CTA bus lanes on Chicago Avenue and new protected bike lanes along Halsted Street.
