The West Englewood community is moving forward with plans for a new fieldhouse in historic Ogden Park at 6500 S. Racine, city officials announced today. The announcement follows the Chicago Park District Board’s approval of a design contract for the $25 million project, which will be partially funded by $12 million in City TIF dollars alongside Park District and state funding.

The Park District plans to begin engaging the community on the detailed design of the new fieldhouse in Spring 2026.

“Investments like the one we are celebrating today are about more than just a space for play and recreation,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “They are about ensuring that all Chicagoans have access to shared places that build a sense of belonging and pride in their community. Ogden Park already serves as a community hub for Englewood residents, and this new fieldhouse will only expand the opportunities available to young people, families, and seniors across the neighborhood.”

Earlier today, the Park District Board authorized an agreement with Booth Hansen Ltd. to design, construct, and provide administrative services for the new fieldhouse, which will replace the existing structure dating back to 1904. The current building is deteriorated and no longer meets the needs of the community.

The new fieldhouse will feature a gymnasium, dedicated boxing gym, fitness room, dance room, teen room, and clubroom, along with support facilities including restrooms, storage, offices, and utility spaces. The project reflects a continued commitment by the City and Park District to invest in historically disinvested communities.

“This project reflects a dream fulfilled, and I’m excited to join Mayor Johnson, Alderman Moore, and residents of West Englewood to celebrate a huge win for the community,” said Park District General Superintendent and CEO Carlos Ramirez-Rosa. “Park fieldhouses are designed to bring people together, expand recreational opportunities, and support the wellbeing of patrons of all ages.

“Ogden Park has long been in need of a fieldhouse that meets the needs of this active community. As we prepare to launch the design phase, we look forward to engaging residents to ensure this investment has a lasting impact.”

Ogden Park spans 60 acres and offers a variety of indoor and outdoor amenities, including a gymnasium, fitness center, boxing gym, dance studio, multi-purpose room, nature garden, playgrounds, carousel, walking track, swimming pool, baseball diamonds, and basketball and tennis courts. The park also hosts year-round programming, including Park Kids after-school programs, summer day camps, boxing, teen programs, and Junior Bears activities.
